I believe that I have learned more about history this year, than any other previous course. The learning process went beyond factual teaching, we studied the "Why". I believe that this was important in learning the history of our country. America has shifted to a new era of thought, in war, and foreign relations. No better of a movie to embody this idea than the one we watched, 13 Days. The movie, about JFK and the conflict with Russia, in Cuba, expressed this new war ideology, that war will not be fought by two dominant powers. War will be fought though a minor country, with major powers supporting either side. A war between Russia, and America would result in global extinction. That being said, this year was successful.

Climate Politics Letter
Dear Citizen of 2216,
2016 was a huge year for history. The people of America wanted change. In this election year, candidates from the Democratic, and Republican Party could not be more different. The radical views from Republican Nominee, Donald Trump strongly contradict those of Hillary Clinton, and Bernie Sanders, both fighting for the Democratic Nominee. The issue of Climate Change is one topic that could not be more different between the candidates. Opinions on Climate Change differ greatly amongst the major political parties, whether it is seen as a major threat, or merely a natural occurrence, Climate Change is a topic that needs to be answered.
In order to gain a perspective on the topic, it needs to be clear why there is such differing opinions on something factual, and researched. America in 2016 is ranked 25th globally for concerns about Global Warming by a poll conducted from The Pew Research Center[1]. This number is even more frightening when the fact that only 42% of the US population sees Climate Change as a threat. Relative to Brazil's 75% concerned, this is a problem. Lack of concern is a huge issue. In the late 20’s and 30’s, America was expanding and growing rapidly. People began over farming land, in order to supply a growing consumer market. The over-farming of land led to major agricultural issues. Loose top soil, and dry ground created a ticking time-bomb, waiting to explode. Large gusts of wind would pick up this loose soil creating dust clouds unlike anything America had seen before. This problem originated from a lack of concern. The people of the time may not have known that their farming methods were wrong, but after seeing the effects, it would be impossible not to know that something was up. We are experiencing this today with Climate Change. In the future, we may be looked back as a generation that watched Global harm commence, the same way that we look at the Dust Bowl. It is clear that we need to be concerned with such an issue. This problem needs to be addressed, and resolved.
There is no better place, or time, to resolve the issue than now in the United States. We are a growing nation. America is starting to become less dependant on other nations. In the 70’s and 80’s, America was heavily reliant on the Persian Gulf for crude oil. Today, only 12.9% of oil is from the Persian Gulf. 38.8% of oil that we use is extracted locally(Information from Energy Information Administration[2]). It is know that burning petroleum emits carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas; carbon monoxide, a lethal gas; sulfur dioxide; nitrogen oxide; particulate matter; volatile organic compounds; and lead and air toxics(information from Environment Ecology[3]). It seems strange to use an energy source so harmful to the environment. That raises the question “Why is oil supported by some candidates, but Climate Change not?” In order to find the answer to that question, it needs to be understood why political candidates bring opinion into a factual issue.
Lobbying money to political candidates is not just to help a candidate win, it can be a legal bribe to help accomplish something. Donald J. Trump, Republican Presidential Candidate, has been lobbying money since 1987. He lobbied not to support a party, evident by his support hopping from the Democratic Party, to the Republican Party, but to change law in benefit for himself. He has lobbied for the height limit of a building, number of slots of planes allowed at Reagan International Airport, and to impose a corporate tax on rival Native American Casinos(Facts from Politico[4]). Trump lobbies to benefit his business interests. This is important to know when looking at the Presidential Nominees. Most of the support from lobbyist groups and PAC’s comes from the Oil and Gas industry. In 2012 79$ Million dollars was given to the two parties, 89% of that(53$ Million) was lobbied to the Republican Party(Information from Open Secrets[5]). This is a major influence on the Party financially. It has only grown over the past 15 years. The money lobbied has increase by over 2$ Billion dollars since 2000(Information from Open Secrets[6]).This raises the question “Do Politicians make decisions for themselves, or is it the groups that support and help the Politicians?” The answer is likely that the Politicians are swayed by lobbyist groups. This is evident by Hillary’s support for the Keystone XL pipeline. Only 43% of the Democratic Party supported the endeavor, but Hillary was a major supporter of the build. This is because Hillary received a large amount of money from Oil and Gas lobbyist and PAC groups(Pew Research Center [7]). With this information, it is clear that in order to resolve the Climate Change issue, Candidates cannot continue to listen to the money, and need to read the facts. Climate Change is not just China’s issue, but an issue affecting the entire world, and the next president needs to not only address this, but look for a solution.

Climate Politics
In politics, there is a lot of talk revolving around a changing climate. There are two prevailing arguments: 1. The World is heating up causing the climate to change drastically. 2. The Climate is not changing, merely a shift in natures cycle, cold events such as blizzards are evidence of that. This is a brief and simplified version of each general ideology. Some may have different ideas, however these are the two prevailing consensus's in politics.
For Republicans, the common belief is that the climate is not changing, and it is merely a shift in natures cycle. This idea is fronted by leader of the economic relm of the presidential nominees, and supreme leader of the United States, Donald J. Trump. Trump tweeted,
"The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive."
"Any and all weather events are used by the GLOBAL WARMING HOAXSTERS to justify higher taxes to save our planet! They don't believe it $$$$!"
"Ice storm rolls from Texas to Tennessee - I'm in Los Angeles and it's freezing. Global warming is a total, and very expensive, hoax!"
Trump uses examples of cold weather to explain that the climate, in his mind, isn't changing.
Washington Post Trump Tweets
For Democrats, the belief that the World is heating up causing the climate to change drastically. This idea is backed by current Democratic front-runner, Hillary Clinton. She tweeted,
"Climate change is real, and threatens us all. We need to act."

Climate topic selection
For my topic I would like to study Climate Science. I choose this because I really enjoy science, and climate science is a heavy discussed topic in politics, another topic I thoroughly enjoy, and the discussion of the change in climate and the study of climate, past, and future, and how scientists study and analyze the results.

Climate
Top five words that come to mind when I hear "Climate"
1. Change
2. Long-term
3. Forward-thinking
4. Effects
5. Graph
Why these words come to mind
1. It is a common topic in presidential debates, and is frequently discussed on news stations arguing the significance.
2. It is not weather, it is the change in the environment and atmosphere over a long period of time. One's perspective must extend past his/her lifetime, forward and backward.
3. You need to understand the effects of what you are doing, and try to predict how that will effect climate, and if it is wrong or not.
4. The effect of climate is subjective to one's environmental conditions.
5. Climate is usually represented in a graph, however seeing a change in climate though images is also common.
Who is to "blame" those who created climate issues, or those stood by?

President Hoover responded incorrectly by thinking that the individualistic attitude of America would resolve the crash. He believed that the economy would "bounce back", and recover from this downturn. Many did not believe that it was the government's position to resolve the problem. Men began to blame themselves when things started to go wrong, because prior to the crash, men were often the soul providers of the family, and to ask for assistance evoked a feeling of worthlessness, and self-pity. I believe their response was valid. A rapidly increasing consumer culture made many believe that in order to be happy, you had to have a lot of possessions. This led to a rapidly growing material society. It suddenly became easy to take out a loan to buy an appliance, or a seemingly unimportant purchase. These purchases added up, and due to the inhabitability to pay off these loans, when rates increase, people, unknowingly, created a massive economic downturn. It should be embarrassing to have to rely on someone else because of a mistake that you made.
If I had been there on that day, I believe I would have reacted like Cooper(Matthew McConaughey) and Murph(Mackenzie Foy) from interstellar. It would be a tremendous event, however the shock of it would not have been as present. I believe the feeling would be more of relief, rather than shock. Relief that it is over, that until the next season, having to worry about abandonment, suffocation, and solitude are all feelings that I can ignore until the next season returns. I would probably ask, "Why are we doing this to ourselves?" And if the cause is unknown, then I would ask "Why is this happening?"
The western third of Kansas, Southeastern Colorado, the Oklahoma Panhandle, the northern two-thirds of the Texas Panhandle. and Northeastern New Mexico were affected by the Dust Bowl, an area of 500x300 miles. Drought, but mostly poor farming and tending techniques brought by pioneers and explorers. I agree with the historian's perspective. I believe it had to do with the stubbornness of the society. Their ignorance and drive to make the most money ended in their demise.
It was a significant migration. For a population to lose 25%-40% of it's residents, is difficult to grasp. The economic effects had to be more severe, loosing that many workers creates an unifiable void that causes prices locally to increase. Acceptance made life in California most difficult. Having to work immigrant worker's jobs for a few dollars a day was incredibly difficult. With a lack of acceptance and it being easier to hire immigrants, finding work in California was awful.

The Technology Behind Radio
In the late 19th century, many scientist proposed the idea of radio. They theorized it’s possibilities, and came to conclusion that transmitting radio waves is possible. It took almost ten years before the first scientist,Guglielmo Marconi, in 1894, created the first, successful radio.
Radio’s are fairly simple, in theory. A radio station transfers material(like a song or advertisement)into radio waves. This step is called modulation. The information modulated is broadcasted through radio waves, which can be picked up by an antenna. In order to hear the sound transmitted, the radio system needs to tune in to the correct frequency or amplitude depending on the broadcast system. If it is broadcasted with variation in amplitude, then it is AM, meaning amplitude modulation, and if it is broadcasted with variation in frequency, then it is FM, frequency modulation.
I will be talking about amplitude modulation for the rest of the paper, because it was not until 1941 that FM was created. For a radio to understand the material sent, it has to understand how it was sent. A radio station sends a sine wave, called a carrier signal. It has no variation. Simultaneously, a wave with varying amplitude is sent. The two waves are then multiplied by each other, and that is the broadcast signal. The radio, then determines the amplitudes of the station, and compares that with the signal sent. This information is translated into sound, travels out a speaker, and to the ears.
Relative to FM, AM has a lower signal strength. With modulation in amplitude, some parts of the data sent may not be picked up, causing the sound to not play. It is broadcasted with a cap of 50kW. AM also operates at a lower frequency of around 535 kHz to 1605 kHz. AM waves can look similar to waves being sent by natural things, such as the sun. This can cause interference, and makes the maximum broadcasting rage limited. However, at night, when the ionosphere that the sun produces is not as prevalent, radio can transmit further distances. In conclusion, the technology that made radio possible is not as important as the implications of radio. One can now send information out to a large mass of people over long distances.

Pier Review Book
Brooks Johnson's classic: Technology and Economic Growth, though at first may appear to many readers as timeless, and a cult classic, is actually a compilation of haikus with collaboration with a slag dictionary from the 20's. I enjoyed the read.
Abbie Child's book came with colorful pictures that are very entertaining. The book helps to understand the extent at which prohibition took place in America.

Einstein's Theory of Relativity
Einstein's version of the train (from wikipedia page: Relativity of Simultaneity) "Einstein's version of the experiment presumed slightly different conditions, where a train moving past the standing observer is struck by two bolts of lightning simultaneously, but at different positions along the axis of train movement (back and front of the train car). In the inertial frame of the standing observer, there are three events which are spatially dislocated, but simultaneous: event of the standing observer facing the moving observer , event of lightning striking the front of the train car, and the event of lightning striking the back of the car.
Since the events are placed along the axis of train movement, their time coordinates become projected to different time coordinates in the moving train's inertial frame. Events which occurred at space coordinates in the direction of train movement (in the stationary frame), happen earlier than events at coordinates opposite to the direction of train movement. In the moving train's inertial frame, this means that lightning will strike the front of the train car before two observers align (face each other)."
While war was waging in France, Einstein was under attack in America. Einstein was forced to prove what seemed impossible to prove. How could Einstein move an object at the speed of light. In order to prove his theory, he set out on an expedition. He gathered an English and an American Scientist and sent them to Africa to get long exposures of an eclipse. In order to prove his theory, Einstein needed to prove that light and gravity were relative. He needed to show that gravity affects light. Having to haul the expensive camera equipment with fragile lenses became a challenge for the scientists. The first expedition was a failure. Poor conditions prevented the scientists from capturing a long exposed image of the eclipse. However the second journey was successful. Einstein proved that light bends around objects.
That was the information that I knew before the research process began. Though it may seem complex and multilayered, it is a simple concept that a third grader can grasp. I started off researching from a newspaper archive called ReadEX. I was interested to find and article about how a 16 year old boy was being praised across the nation for being one of thirteen to understand relativity. I thought about this for a while. I dawned on me that the reason this is such a monumental theory is not the cultural significance of having inaccurate clocks, or seeing movement differently. The importance is that Einstein was able to conceive the idea in his head. To be able to spark such an idea from nothing is remarkable, especially at the time that he did. After realizing this I remembered reading about how Einstein was missing certain parts of his brain, and certain parts were larger. This is not like a Phrenology bust, however parts of the brain are associated with the creation of certain things. Einstein's partial lobe was 15% larger than the average brain, and he was missing parts of his brain, which allowed for neural communication to be more clear. Being able to conjure relativity required the perfect brain to do so. Einstein claimed to be heavily visual with his thought(much like myself) with this, he was able to theorize and simulate events in his head. Back to the 16 year old boy in the Bronx. His ability to understand Einstein must have came f

WWI Poster Analysis
USH 1 - WWI Poster Analysis
1. Propaganda is an art used to promote an idea or to persuade a person to preform an action or duty.
2. Dictionary.com defines propaganda as: information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help orharm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc
3-8. Propaganda Pieces
Image 1: The image struck me as very formal and reminded me of heroism. The border and the man wielding a flag, while riding a horse reminded me of Teddy Roosevelt. The text seems to convey the idea that if I decided not to join the military, I was dishonoring my country, and that I would be a lesser man. The author intends on persuading men to enlist in the military. The author assumes that the viewer is male and of appropriate age. I believe that it is alright for the government to produce this poster. Without the poster, the amount of Americans fighting in WWI may have been less.
Image 2: The image is very invasive. It has an old man, Uncle Sam, dressed in patriotic clothing requesting for me to join the army. The author uses an older man to make the viewer feel obliged to respect him, in the time of the poster people held elders in society to higher standards and often looked up to them with respect. The author assumes that all viewers are male and are able to fight. This poster os still very famous today, it is one of the most successful propaganda pieces in American history and because of it many people joined the military.
Image 3: The image is very casual. It has a woman in uniform leisurely walking, hand in pocket. Her hair is blowing in the wind. The author uses a woman to seduce readers to join the Navy. It appeals to younger viewers that believe that joining the military will bring women into their lives. The artist assumes that the reader is male and most likely single. For the government to use tax dollars to produce this poster is sort of weird. Since it's goal is to seduce men into joining the military it is a weird basis to use tax dollars on, however I believe that it was successful and justified the governments reason for producing the poster.

Combination of 4 generalized theses for the Progressive Era
Within the Progressive Era many themes are relevant through the perspective of a 21st century student. The Progressive Era focused on the betterment and advancement of people through the reaction to dangers, the advent of new technology, and the idea of bettering general life. The government needed to choose when to intervene, like if something imposed on the health or wellbeing of a nation. The solution to some of the problems posed issues. With an array of new technology being invented, dangers presented themselves often.

Thesis
Though the progressive era had many benefits to society, each reform bore negativity. With the Shirtwaist fire, the reform was successful, however the death was incomparable to any other similar event. The advent of White Castle revolutionized the food industry, however it brought with it terrible health deficits. The radio transformed communication, however without radio, WWI would be more localized and less costly. Finally the light bulb transformed the way that people lived. It expanded the way people worked and lived, but the price expanded the poverty gap and acted as a physical representation of the poverty gap.

Progressivism Newspaper Research
Researching on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, I discovered that it was not just a horrible American tragedy, but from the ashes of the building, large scale reform began to take place, changing the way that factories operate. I examined newspaper articles about the fire, and its effects on ReadEx. Examining the articles I learned how atrocious this fire was. I had known about the fire, but the vividness of the articles surprised me. Learning about how the door was locked preventing escape, and how the fire escape was too weak to support the escapees, causing them to fall to their death, and how many women were taken by the fire, left unidentifiable to families and friends.
Collapsed Fire Escape
Unrecognizable Bodies Being Inspected
Collapsed Fire Escape
Unrecognizable Bodies Being Inspected
This story struck me. I can't believe that before the fire, there were few regulations on safety of the workers. I learned that after the fire, company leaders began to really focus on safety in the work area. Legislation was passed that made disasters like the Shirtwaist Factory impossible. The women were honored as heroes, and memorials were held in their place. The public was enthralled by the event. I learned that Women's Unions worked to ensure the victims receive pay for their sacrifice. The fire sparked massive changes in how companies operate. Fire drills became mandatory, and escape routes were redesigned.
The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire is a great example of progressivism because you have a problem, fire killing hundreds of people, and from that problem reform begins. Overall the reforms were successful. 25 of the 28 bills submitted were passed, making the workplace safer. Civil lawsuits helped reimburse the families. The fire was an absolute tragedy. However, I believe that without the fire, the reforms and legislation would not have passed as successfully as they did. Socially people became more aware about fire safety as New York grew taller with buildings as some reached heights of over 760 feet. There was a problem, the fire, and by thinking about the future, and how something like this could be prevented, employers pushed for reform of factory safety. Bills were passed, and jobs were created to prevent disasters like the fire from happening.

Reflections
This quarter I have improved drastically. I am turning in the homework assignments, my analytical writing has improved, and my study and research habits have been changed. Last semester I would occasionally not turn in the reading questions. They were an easy assignment that could be completed in under 30 minutes. This quarter, I have tried my best to turn all of them in, with correct answers. I have grown as a writer. I stress less on the summarizing and focus my writing on the writers intentions. I study more for the tests. Most of the questions test on logic as well as material knowledge. If one does not know the material, it would be hard to answer a question asking them an "EXCEPT..." question. I believe that in order to be able to take an AP History course next year, I will need to continue on this path of growth to be able to funnel my efforts on completion.

Driving has become nearly obsolete, cars stop them selves, park themselves, and can drive themselves. i believe that technology will change the structure of the roads, and Elon Musk is working on a rail system that can travel 760 MPH. Transportation will be faster and safer, and the scientific community is resolving diseases, so I believe that diseases like Malaria, AIDS, and some cancers can be treated and eradicated similar to smallpox

"Hawaiian, The Legend of Eddie Aikau"
1. The documentary's filmmakers call this film Hawaiian, The Legend of Eddie Aikau because Eddie is a true Hawaiian, and lived a life more than human and didn't just live for himself, or his family, but for Hawaii and all that it stands for.
2. The fils angle was that Most of the Hawaiian culture was seized and almost everything cultural aspect was lost, but Eddie Aikau felt that surfing, family, and culture was a vital part of true Hawaiian culture, and Eddie felt obligated to retain the true spirit of Hawaii through surfing and devotion to community and heritage.
3. We can understand about how the fact that the documentary was made as a part of ESPN's sports programming that the audience's expectations was that the movie was to be action packed with sports and surfing.
4. The dilm might have been different if it were made by PBS or History channel because PBS and History Channel would have made the movie less about the opinion of Eddie, and his sense of family and surfing, and more about the statistics and facts of Hawaiian culture and the travel to Hawaii from Tahiti.

a. Topic: Theodore Roosevelt

Phenology and Antique Research
Today in history, we examined a bust with the words phenology, L.N. Fowler, Legate Circus, and many feelings and human traits on it. We were tasked to research the bust to find information about it. Many students went about the process in different ways. Some looked for the authentication of the bust, while others looked at the science. Some even researched the study in whole, dating back to Greek times. In this research I discovered that finding key words helps to filter out the unnecessary information. I ignored researching the human feelings and traits, and researched the maker and what it was. By doing this, I cut my research time down tremendously, and was able to figure out exactly what it was, who made it, and when it was made. "The place or source of origin", provenance, was determined through researching the key words located on the piece. This cane applicable to other forms of research by searching names, places, and dates in order to determine the provenance of an antique, recreation, or forgery.
